GOD’S PROMISE OF STRENGTH
Isaiah 41:10
“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
As I was pondering this verse, I was thinking about how amazing it is that some things NEVER change. The prophet Isaiah, about 700 BC, wrote this prophetic book to Judah. (Keep in mind: the Old Testament was not written TO us but was written FOR us.)
This verse is both a command and a promise, and just like 2700 years ago… we need BOTH today.
We are surrounded by a myriad of reasons to be fearful: the news, the economy, the Chinese, the Iranians, the Russians, the unknown, and on and on.
Back when Isaiah wrote this, God’s children in Judah were fearful of both the Assyrians and Egyptians yet were spared because of God’s mercy.
Another translation puts this verse like this: “Do not yield to fear, for I am always near. Never turn your gaze from me, for I am your faithful God. I will infuse you with my strength and help you in every situation. I will hold you firmly with my victorious right hand.”
To me, that helps make it more personal. It’s not that fear will go away completely, but I am told to NOT YIELD to it (my choice) for “For I am always near” (God’s choice.)
Have you ever been with someone who checks their cell phone or watch every minute or two? You’re talking to them but their “gaze,” their “attention,” is only partially on you. Annoying, right?
We tend to do that with God and He tells us to NOT turn our gaze FROM Him but to always keep it ON Him.
If we do that, we can sidestep fear, receive strength and move forward! Otherwise … we don’t.
Prayer: LORD, I need You, Your protection, your power, your presence. Help me to keep FOCUSED on YOU and not on the fearful issues of this life. Amen.
