40 Days of NEW with GOD
Day 10 | NEW HOPE
NEW HOPE

Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you says the LORD. Plans to prosper and not to harm you, to give you hope and a future.”

I've always liked the word HOPE. The dictionary says hope means "to cherish a desire with anticipation: to want something to happen or be true."

The context for this verse is that God is telling the Israelites, through His prophet Jeremiah, that they would be captives in Babylon for 70 years (which seems like a LONG time – but remember, they were enslaved people in Egypt for 400 years.)   God was reminding them what He thought about them, that He had not forgotten them, that He had cared for them, and that He had seen a future for them.

Have you ever wondered if God knows what you're going through or cares or has a plan for you? (Actually, I suspect we ALL have wondered that from time to time.)

Charles Spurgeon said: "The prophet had the double duty of putting down their false hopes and sustaining their right expectations. He, therefore, plainly warned them against expecting more than God had promised, and he aroused them to look for the fulfillment of what he had promised."

Spurgeon added, "The Lord not only thinks OF you but TOWARDS you. His thoughts are all drifting your way. Brethren, when we cannot know the thoughts of the Lord because they are too high for our conception or too deep for our understanding, yet the Lord knows them."

Since God is forever the same, we can also read this verse as a promise to us today, but be cautious about reading all your earthly desires into it.

We HAVE a future. God knows what is around the next corner of your life and mine. God wants to prosper us and give us HOPE and a future.

Let me ask: what are you hoping for? Just thinking of that can reveal a lot about you to yourself. Are your hopes Biblio-centric? Do your hopes line up with the clearly revealed Word of God? If so… GREAT!

God wants to give you NEW HOPE. Wherever you are today, remember: God loves you, knows ALL about you, and knows your future. (Don't ask me how He does it; he's God!)

Prayer: LORD, I always need HOPE. Thank You for supplying that through Your Holy Spirit and the Word of God. Amen.
