Day 7 | TEACHINGS FOR TEACHERS

TEACHINGS FOR TEACHERS
Matthew 13:52
“And Jesus said to them, ‘Therefore every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a head of a household, who brings out of his treasure things new and old.’”
To some degree, we are ALL teachers. Whether raising children, instructing a colleague at work, helping a neighbor do something around the house they didn’t know how to do, or whatever… most of us teach in some way occasionally.
Jesus was teaching his disciples about the Kingdom of God and that everyone who knows God’s Word will want to know both the OLD and the NEW. Charles Spurgeon said: “He is not weary of the old; he is not afraid of the new.”
Many today are “set in their ways,” and – whether it be church music (old vs new) or clothing styles “appropriate” for church – at the end of the day, we need to be OK with both the old and the new.
The main thought here from Jesus is that the disciples – now teachers – who claimed to understand what Jesus was teaching here, are now responsible for teaching others… things old (Old Testament) and new (New Testament).
Theologian William Barclay put Jesus’ words this way: “After you have been instructed by me, you have the knowledge, not only of the things you used to know, but of things you never knew before, and even the knowledge which you had before is illuminated by what I have told to you.”
The Old and New Testaments have much to teach us about God – Father, Son, and Spirit – the old times, future events, and eternity with Him.
Prayer: LORD, help me value and share with others – as You lead – the beauty of the Old and New Testaments. Amen.
