Day 6 | A NEW HEART AND SPIRIT
A NEW HEART AND SPIRIT
Ezekiel 36:25-27
“Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.”
Ezekiel, the prophet, was speaking prophetically here about the New Covenant. Under the LAW, God’s children tried to KEEP all the laws… but failed. Looking ahead to the New Covenant, under Jesus, the Holy Spirit was to come in and work on changing them from the inside out. This would happen because the LORD gave his children a NEW heart and a NEW spirit.
Charles Spurgeon said: “True religion begins, then, with the heart, and the heart is the ruling power of manhood. You may enlighten a man’s understanding, and you have done much, but as long as his heart is wrong, the enlightenment of the understanding only enables him to sin with a greater weight of responsibility resting upon him.”
In the New Testament, we read: “Therefore, if anyone [is] in Christ, [he is] a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
God also promises – in this prophecy – to take away the “heart of stone” (cold, uncaring, unfeeling, stubborn) and replace it with a “heart of flesh” (which can feel, enjoy, love God, and love others.
How’s YOUR heart? A bit cold, critical, unfeeling, and angry?
Ask our LORD to give you a loving, caring, concerned-for-others – a NEW heart and spirit.
Prayer: LORD, I know I’m far from being like Jesus in every way yet, so I ask that you continue to work on my heart and spirit. Thank you. Amen.
