Day 37 | JESUS THE THANKFUL
JESUS THE THANKFUL

John 11:41
“So they removed the stone. And Jesus raised His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.”

Remember the story of Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha? They were apparently all very close to Jesus as friends, and they worshipped Jesus as their Lord. Lazarus becomes very sick, and his sisters send word to Jesus – who is not far away – to come quickly (in hopes that He would heal His friend, their brother Lazarus). Purposely, Jesus does NOT come quickly. Lazarus dies and is buried in a tomb in the day’s tradition.

Then, four days later, when there is no doubt about Lazarus’ death, Jesus says: “I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let’s go to him.” (John 11:15)  When they arrive at the tomb, Jesus is troubled by all the grief He sees, and that’s where we get that ultimate short Bible verse, “Jesus wept” (John 11:35).   Following the story we discover that Jesus had a plan to demonstrate to His followers, including Mary and Martha and the neighbors and friends who are there to comfort the sisters, that His Father God has ultimate power, EVEN over death.

Jesus says: “Remove the stone.” So they removed the stone. And Jesus raised His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. But I knew that You always hear Me; nevertheless, because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.” And when He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” Out came the man who had died, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” (John 11:41-44)

Ponder again that Jesus, the Son of God, prays THANKFULLY to the Father before performing this ultimate miracle.

Jesus the Thankful. If we want to be more like Jesus, we must be more thankful.

Prayer: LORD, thank You for showing us the way and the necessity of being thankful. You deserve ALL my thanks. Amen.
