ADD THANKSGIVING
Colossians 4:2
“Be persistent and devoted to prayer, being alert and focused in your prayer life with an attitude of thanksgiving.” (AMP)
How often do you pray? Daily? Just at meals with the family? Together in church when they say the Lord’s Prayer? And, how PERSISTENT are you in prayer? If you have a need or hear of something that needs prayer, do you pray once and then forget it?
I feel that we could all treat our prayers with more diligence. We need to be MORE devoted and persistent. We need to be more focused and alert. And we need to show our Lord an attitude of THANKSGIVING.
This verse reminds me of what Paul similarly wrote the Philippians when he said: “Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation], by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God.” (Philippians 4:6, AMP)
We need to remember to add THANKSGIVING to our prayers; remember to thank God for something He has already done for us OR in advance (as an act of faith) for what He is GOING to do for us.
Yes, we need to pray IN faith, and “faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.” (Romans 10:17) That tells me that as we pray, or before we pray, we should understand what God’s Word says about the issue we’re praying for. I find it much easier to feel faith well up within me when I can tie my request (whether for myself or someone else) to Scripture that deals with that situation. That’s not always something you can do, but when you can, it can be a powerful encouragement to pray.
Be alert and focused on your prayer life; it’s more potent than most know.
Prayer: LORD God, thank You for the privilege of talking to You in prayer. Help me to make the most of our time together. Amen.
