SONGS, PRAISE, AND THANKSGIVING
Jonah 2:9
“But I will offer sacrifices to you with songs of praise, and I will fulfill all my vows. For my salvation comes from the Lord alone.” (NLT)
What do you know about Jonah in the Bible? Yes, THAT Jonah. Big fish (or whale), swallowed for 3 days, then barfed up on land… and all the rest.
It’s important to realize that the book of Jonah is part of the Bible and as important as John 3:16. For we know that “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
So, what does today’s verse have to do with anything?
Jonah gave praise (thanksgiving), sang songs to the LORD, and promised to fulfill his vows to God from INSIDE the big fish.
The story is that Jonah was being rebellious and avoided going where the LORD had told him to go and do what the Lord had told him to do. He KNEW he was wrong but didn’t want to obey God. (Have you been there?)
And so, ONLY after God had Jonah swallowed up and spend 3 days/nights in the belly of that fish did Jonah get smart and sacrifice praise/thanksgiving to God AND promise to do as God had told him. Then, when God released him from his WET jail cell, Jonah realized that his salvation – spiritually AND from the fish – came from the LORD alone.
Many Christians have been there, too. NOT wanting to OBEY God and NOT wanting to praise Him or give Him the THANKS He deserves. But God loves YOU as much as He loved Jonah, and He will do what needs to be done to get you back to where you belong.
My suggestion: give Him the praise, the thanks, the songs that He deserves now. Avoid the “Big Fish” (it really stinks).
Prayer – LORD, I do thank You for your patience with me. Guide me, lead me, speak to me, day to day. I love you. Amen.
