Day 24 | OUR JOY AND THANKSGIVING
OUR JOY AND THANKSGIVING
Psalm 91:1-2
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.’”
I suspect that when the “average person” thinks of the word “thanksgiving,” he thinks about something someone has done for him, perhaps given him a present or a salary raise or perhaps some other unexpected and pleasant act.
The psalmist here in Psalm 91 (we’re not sure who he was, maybe Moses) is singing joyously and thankfully to the LORD with music and song SIMPLY because the Lord is our Rock; He is Great and is the King above ALL other (fake) gods.
We live in an unstable, uncertain, unpredictable and even dangerous world today. Psalm 91 – and I encourage you to read it all – was written to someone facing difficulties: “You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.” (verses 5-6)
Thus, because our LORD God promises, “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings, you will find refuge;” (verse 4), the author of this psalm is singing for JOY and giving GREAT THANKS to our LORD God Almighty!
In today’s verses, we find FOUR Hebrew names for our God, each showing a different perspective of our Lord, and EACH worth giving thanks for!
ELYON: God Most High – higher than ANY king or president or dictator or false gods of any nation.
SHADDAI: Almighty – all-sufficient God – more potent than any situation.
YAHWEH: LORD – Jehovah – covenant-making God faithful to ALL His promises. God’s MOST Holy name.
ELOHIM: My God. Creator God (Gen 1.1): His Greatness and Glory exceed ALL we can imagine.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for being so Great, Powerful, and Awesome… and thank You for loving me. Amen.
