Day 34 | WISDOM WITH WORDS
WISDOM WITH WORDS

Proverbs 18
“A man who isolates himself seeks his own desire; he rages against all wise judgment. A fool has no delight in understanding, but in expressing his own heart.”

Some people do NOT want to get together with other people and talk about anything substantive.  Much like the one who says, "Don't confuse me with the facts; my mind is made up." Solomon is teaching us that there can be wisdom in listening to other's thoughts about something we are considering.

As Prov 15:22 says: "Without counsel, plans fail, but with many advisers, they succeed.”

And here in Proverbs 18 starting with verse 4, “The words of a man's mouth are deep waters; the wellspring of wisdom is a flowing brook. A fool's lips enter into contention, a fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul. The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles.”

Listen to them talk if you want to know what someone is thinking.  Jesus said: "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks."

Here in verse 10 – “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”

We live in stressful times, and even Christ-Followers NEED a strong, protective, and safe place.  The LORD is that place.

Verse 15 tells us, “The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.”

Many would agree with this verse, and yet, how many Believers are actively, week by week, seeking knowledge from the Word of God?  How many are seeking God's plan and will in a life matter?

We learn in verse 21 that “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”

A fundamental teaching from Solomon is that our mouths – the words we speak – can give LIFE to someone who needs help, encourage and uplift, or they can cause more stress, pain, or death (physical, psychological, mental).  We are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26), and our words MATTER.

Prayer: LORD God, help me review this Proverb often and apply the lessons here to the words I speak.
