Day 08 | KEY TO A LONG AND PEACEFUL LIFE
KEY TO A LONG AND PEACEFUL LIFE
Proverbs 3:1-4
“My son, do not forget my teaching, but have your heart comply with my commandments; For length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and a good reputation in the sight of God and man.”
Do you remember going to junior high school? Do you remember specific things you learned or did there? I remember a couple of things, but not much. (Though I do remember writing a HUMOR column for the school newspaper every month. Ha!)
Solomon wrote the Proverbs for his son so that he could be a successful King one day.
Here, we read Solomon telling his son to not forget his teachings. Then – being a wise father – he told his son WHAT the payoff would be if he DID as his father told him. “For length of days and years of life and peace, they will add to you.”
That’s a fabulous promise!
Solomon also tells his son that he will “find FAVOR and a good reputation in the sight of God and man.”
Everyone I know wants a long life, a good life, and peace. Everyone I know wants to be liked by others (have good friends) and a good reputation. But here, Solomon adds, “in the sight of GOD and MAN.”
Ponder that.
Listening to Solomon’s teachings is good… but NOT good if we forget what we read.
It reminds me of the book of James, where we are told, “Be doers of the Word of God, and NOT hearers only.”
Prayer: LORD, help me to remember Your word, meditate on it, and make it a part of my life. Amen.
