40 Days of GRACE - 36

40 Days of GRACE
Day 36 | GROWING IN GRACE
40 Days of GRACE
Day 36 | GROWING IN GRACE
GROWING IN GRACE
2 Peter 3:17-18
“You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” (ESV)
How do you end your letters (mailed or emailed) when you send them to a dear friend or relative?
Here, the Apostle Peter was ending his two-volume letter with a warning and a blessing to his “beloved” (highly loved) brothers and sisters in Christ.
The warning was to NOT let the erroneous teachings and sayings of “lawless” people cause them to stumble. Remember, the new church had no “Bibles” like we have today… maybe just a scroll or two from the Hebrew Bible (aka our Old Testament), and perhaps a letter from an apostle or two. So, they indeed had to stay ON GUARD.
But then, Peter’s last piece of brotherly and even fatherly advice was to “GROW in the GRACE and KNOWLEDGE of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”
When we come to Christ today, as they did back then, receiving Christ is NOT the end of the story. It’s a FRESH beginning that requires us to continue to learn and GROW in our knowledge of God and Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
So, how do we do that?
Well, today, it’s WAY more accessible than it was back then, even though MOST Christians today do NOT read their Bibles or Scriptures daily. (Only 32% reported that they did – Lifeway research). Being in the Word of God daily is essential if we want to “GROW in the GRACE and knowledge of Jesus.”
Your reading (or listening) to this devotion DOES count, and it is written with the goal of helping EACH reader to GROW in their faith and the GRACE of God.
Finally, Peter offers a benediction: “To him be glory both now and in the day of eternity. Amen.”
Prayer: LORD God, thank You for all you have provided for me and help me to continue to GROW in my knowledge and grace of my Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
