40 Days of GRACE
Day 22 | LIVING UNDER THE FREEDOM OF GOD’S GRACE
LIVING UNDER THE FREEDOM OF GOD’S GRACE

Romans 6:12-14
“Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin.  Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have a new life.  So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God. Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law.  Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s GRACE.”

Today, we join Paul’s teaching to the Romans, who are trying to understand their struggle with their old, familiar, sinful way of life and their new life in Christ.  Paul starts by reminding them not to be dragged by our spiritual enemy back into living sinfully as we did before receiving Jesus into our lives. God is our Master now, not sin.

New, young-in-the-faith Christians often struggle with wanting to live in a Christ-honoring way but being used to the old (non-Christ-honoring) way of life.  It’s a common struggle, and Paul here is teaching us all that SIN is no longer our master because we have been set free to live under “God’s grace.”  We are DIFFERENT after putting our faith in Jesus Christ.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”  (2 Corinthians 5:17-18)   The old “you” was born in sin, entirely without God.  Your new, born-again spirit, the new you, is alive unto God.
Paul acknowledges that a wholly changed, God-first life does not often happen the day after one becomes born-again, but becoming more and more like Jesus is something we should pray about and see in our lives.

Philippians 1:6 says: “For I am convinced of this, that the Lord who began a good work in you, will continue to complete it until the day Christ returns.”

Prayer: Lord, thank You for the grace You offer me every day, and help me to live my life in a way that is pleasing to You. Amen.
