40 Days of GRACE
Day 19 | LAW OR GRACE
LAW OR GRACE?
Galatians 5:4-6
“You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.”
How are you at accepting gifts from others? I admit I could be better, but I’m learning to be gracious and just offer a sincere, “thank you.”
In the Bible, under the “Old Covenant” (aka the Old Testament), circumcision was one of the things that followers of God (well, men anyway) were required to do to prove they were committed to Jehovah.
Sometimes, when we receive a gift from someone, we feel we need to reciprocate ASAP. This is a familiar feeling and studies have shown that most people don’t feel “worthy” of a gift, especially if it is given at a time other than birthdays or Christmas.
So, when we come to Christ and receive His FREE GIFT of salvation, some have a tough time just RECEIVING it gracefully. Often, people feel that they have to do something to “earn it,” whereas ALL that needs to be done – and ALL that CAN be done – has been done by Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary… punctuated by His resurrection. As Jesus said on the cross, “It is finished.” He meant that there is NOTHING more that anyone can do to add to the finished work of the cross, which was the ultimate payment for your sins and mine and every other person who has or will ever live.
In today’s verses, Paul was admonishing the Galatians NOT to try to add something extra to what Christ has already done. Don’t go “back to the law” and show that Christ didn’t do enough. That would be ludicrous as well as insulting to Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God.
Prayer, LORD, thank You for all you have done. You did it all, and I am glad to have accepted You, to which all I can say is THANK YOU. Amen.
