Day  36 | GOD: THE SOURCE OF TRUTH
GOD: THE SOURCE OF TRUTH

John 18:37
“I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth.”

Pilate once asked Jesus: “What is truth?”

Here’s a simple Bible-based definition: Truth is that which is consistent with the mind, will, character, glory and being of God. Even more to the point: Truth is the self-expression of God.

Truth is theological because it flows from God. Truth is also ontological – which means the way things really are. We believe that God declared it so and made it so and thus is “the source of reality and the author, source, determiner, governor, arbiter, ultimate standard, and final judge of all truth.” (John MacArthur).

In several places in the Old Testament, we find Almighty God referred to as the “God of truth.”  (Deuteronomy 32:4, Ps 31:5, Isa 65:16).  Jesus referred to Himself as “… the truth” he said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes unto the Father except by me.” (John 14:6).

God is TRUTH and Jesus Christ is TRUTH incarnate… TRUTH born… TRUTH in a body. Jesus is “the brightness of [God’s] glory and the express image of His person.” (Hebrews 1:3)

Jesus also confirmed that God’s Word is TRUTH. Jesus said (regarding God’s Word), that it “cannot be broken” (John 10:35) and then while praying to His Father on behalf of His disciples He said: “Sanctify them by your truth. Your Word is truth.” (John 17:17)

Truth needs a source.  Someone who objectively can decide what is truth.

We believe that Source is Yahweh, God. The great “I AM.

When someone tries to define TRUTH without reference to God, it ultimately fails. Why? Because the definition of truth has within it the requirement for a universal absolute.  And that absolute is, God.

Paul wrote in Romans 1:21-22: “Although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools.”

There are serious moral implications when one tries to disassociate TRUTH from God. “Even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting.” (Romans 1:28).

John MacArthur summarizes the consequences of this choice well: “How each person responds to the truth God has revealed is an issue of eternal significance. To reject and rebel against the truth of God results in darkness, folly, sin, judgment, and the never-ending wrath of God. To accept and submit to the truth of God is to see clearly, to know with certainty and to find life everlasting.”

Prayer: Lord, I acknowledge that YOU are God, and I am NOT.  Therefore, I acknowledge that YOU are the source of all truth. Help me to never forget that, as I journey through an increasingly dark world with so many loud and foolish people who refuse to acknowledge You as Almighty God or Your Son Jesus as the Christ. Amen.
