GRACE AND TRUTH
John 1:14
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1 is a fascinating chapter with some exciting things to teach us. The greatest thing about it, however, is that it points us to Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who was “the Word” (John 1:1) and the One who created everything (John 1:2).
In fact, when John wrote this portion of his Gospel, he teased out a little of WHOM he was speaking in the early verses but then reveals the WHO here in verse 14. “The Word became FLESH and dwelt among us.” Obviously, he’s talking about Jesus.
But then John adds that this Son of God (who came from the Father) was “full of grace and truth.”
I consider that word “full,” and think of how sometimes I have eaten TOO MUCH of my wife’s fabulous cooking and become “full.” I literally don’t want another bite of anything. I am FULL of food.
John is telling us here that Jesus Christ is FULL too. Not of food but, rather, He is “FULL of grace and TRUTH.”
As one Bible commentator said: “These two ideas should hold our minds and direct our lives. God is grace AND truth. Not one without the other. Not the other apart from the one. In His government there can be no lowering of the simple and severe standard of Truth; and there is no departure from the purpose and passion of Grace.”
Those two terms – grace and truth – provide a certain tension. Perhaps somewhat like a mom and dad raising children. Dads often provide the “truth” part – setting the standards and requiring adherence to them. Moms often bring the “grace” part and is frequently quick to forgive transgressions and offer comfort.
Jesus was (and is) both… the perfect blend of truth and grace.
Prayer: Lord, help me to live in your truth and to live in a way pleasing to you. But thank you so much for grace – for those many times that I don’t quite live flawlessly. Amen.
