Day  15 | THE BENEFIT OF MEDITATING ON GOD
THE BENEFIT OF MEDITATING ON GOD

Psalm 63:6-8
“I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night. Because you are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your strong right hand holds me securely.”
(NLT)

David, the author of this Psalm, gives us some practical guidance which will – if practiced – increase our JOY and SECURITY.

Do you worry about tomorrow?  If you’re honest, do you have times when you’re fearful? Don’t you wish for more joy… especially in days like today?

David did too. His life was in danger on and off.  He had to rule a cantankerous people who themselves had an on and off relationship with Jehovah… and with David.

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night in a panic or fear about something which you could do nothing about at that moment?  I’m guessing from this Psalm that David did too.

So what did David do?

He practiced meditation. But this meditation was not something you might imagine from the Eastern Religions.  Rather something befitting a follower of Yahweh… Jehovah God.  Something WE should practice too.  David meditated on Almighty God.

Through the night, he pondered God’s greatness, His power, His provision, His protection, His truthfulness, His love, and so much more.

David gives us this word picture: “I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings.”

Another translation puts the verses from Psalm 63 this way: “Often at night I lie in bed and remember You, meditating on Your greatness till morning smiles through my window.  You have been my constant helper; therefore, I sing for joy under the protection of Your wings.  My soul clings to You; Your right hand reaches down and holds me up.”

Now isn’t David’s method of dealing with sleeplessness superior to the one where you toss and turn and worry and fret through the night?

So, you might be wondering… HOW can I do like David did?

Let me be practical and ask: What do you usually think about, watch, read, or listen to before you go to bed?  Studies show that whatever that is will have an impact on your sleep.

Do you often watch or read the news just before bed?  Do you tend to watch sad or violent movies or read the same in books?

If you could take the gist of what you typically read, watch, listen to, or think about… and cause that to bounce around in your thoughts throughout the night when you’re trying to sleep… is it any wonder that at times, you can’t?

On the other hand, reading something like Psalm 63… or even just the verses for today… might help you sleep with the confidence of knowing that HIS strong right hand holds YOU securely.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for offering me, as you did David, the help I need to sleep and recharge.  Help me to MEDITATE more on You Lord and to brush aside all the cares of today.  Help me to enjoy resting in the shadow of Your wings.  Amen.
