The POWER of 10
Day 26 | A NEW CREATION
A NEW CREATION
2 Corinthians 5:17
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”
When you were a kid, did you ever play a game and need a “do-over”? Perhaps you messed up, missed the pitch or the basket, but got a chance to try again? You probably appreciated the other kids giving you the do-over but didn’t realize they were showing you what the Bible called grace.
The church at Corinth was prominent in the first century. Located in Greece, it was important militarily and commercially. It was prosperous but also well-known for its immorality. Because of Corinth’s bad reputation, the Greek word “korinthianazomai” was coined, meaning: “to live immorally like a Corinthian.”
Thus, the new believers in the church at Corinth came from that community and had those experiences and backgrounds. That made it a challenge for Paul to lead, guide, and help them change.
When Paul wrote to the Corinthians, there was gross immorality in the church and the leaders tolerated it. Paul was telling the leaders that they must exercise church discipline. Another issue was that believers were taking one another to court, and Paul taught they should handle the disagreements between themselves.
Because of all that was going on, Paul appears to have written more than two letters to the Corinthians, though we only have two to read and study today.
Today’s verse is both challenging and comforting, as Paul teaches that those in Christ, those who are indeed born again, are NEW. They should not return to their old ways as they were each a new creation in Christ Jesus.
How about you? Do you feel like a NEW creation in Christ Jesus? You are, you know. You are not who you were before Christ; thus, we use the term “born-again.” The challenge is that after we accept Christ as Lord and Savior, we need to learn how to live in a Christ-honoring way. It is not something that happens overnight, yet this is why we read and study God’s Word: to be more like Jesus.
Prayer: LORD, thank You for my being born again and thus a new creation in Christ. Help me to continue day by day to be more like Jesus. Amen.
