THE HOLY SPIRIT
Genesis 1:2
“… and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” (NIV)
Many people today don’t believe that God created the world. Many have NOT chosen an all-powerful Creator-God as the answer as to WHERE everything came from. Most seem to agree that creation was “ex nihilo” – out of nothing – with the largest group of those choosing to believe in some form of evolution, which started with the Big Bang. (I’ll mention this again at the end.)
Most Christ followers believe that “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1) which – as I mentioned in the very first devotional of this series – is perhaps THE most important single verse in the Bible. However, many believers are unaware of the participation in creation of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (The Trinity).
The Trinity is a fascinating – albeit challenging – aspect of God especially given that the word “trinity” is not in the Bible. One God, yes! In three persons, yes! I don’t have room in this 2-minute devotional to do a complete Biblical proof, but today’s verse is a key.
People who believe God created it all have no problem with the Creator being God the Father. As we saw in a previous devotional, Christians who study John 1 come to realize that Jesus was a part of creation too “… and through Him (Jesus) nothing was made that has been made.” (See John 1:1-3, 14, Colossians 1:16, Hebrews 1:2) But in Genesis 1:2, we see that the Holy Spirit also participated in creation.
The Holy Spirit does so much for us believers. We are saved, filled, sealed, and sanctified through His power. The Holy Spirit reveals God’s thoughts to us; He teaches, leads, and guides us into all truth. He provides fruit of the spirit and spiritual gifts, helps us when we’re weak, intercedes and prays for us, and more! The Holy Spirit is way underappreciated!
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for figuring this out – including creation – and for ALL you do for me. I believe in You, Father, Son, and Spirit, thinking that if there was a Big Bang, YOU were the “Big Banger,” the One that caused the Bang. Amen.
