The POWER of 10
Day 11 | WISE WORDS
WISE WORDS
Proverbs 15:2
“The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, fools spout folly.”
Previously, we talked about how our words can stir up trouble. Today, we also see the other side of that coin… using our words positively.
It’s interesting how much the Bible has to say about the words we speak. In today’s verse from Proverbs 15, we again have two options. One set of words is commendable while the other is foolish.
In Proverbs 15:1, Solomon talks about how words can stir anger or calm someone down.
In today’s verse, we learn that the tongue – our words – should be used to demonstrate our knowledge in a positive, helpful way. We’ve all seen the movies about the wise “know-it-all-kid” who is obnoxious and self-centered. NO ONE likes to be around someone like that.
On the other hand, someone who uses their words in a calming, helpful, constructive way is appreciated and admired.
Have you ever listened to someone who goes on and on about themselves or a topic they obviously have limited knowledge about? They embarrass themselves, or as this verse says, “Fools spout folly.” One translation says: “Fools are leaky faucets, dripping nonsense.”
I think a bridge over which we all must pass, is asking ourselves HOW we would like our words used in the lives of others: annoyingly or helpfully. I know that sounds simplistic, but it’s a decision each of us gets to make and NEEDS to make.
Psalm 141:3 says: “Take control of what I say, O LORD, and guard my lips.” (NLT)
Is that the desire of your heart? If so, pray for that verse and the first part of today’s verse. The LORD will help you.
Prayer: LORD God, I desire to use my tongue wisely and to say what You lead me to say to everyone I meet. Help me, Lord, and thanks. Amen.
