The POWER of 10
Day 5 | DELIGHT
DELIGHT
Psalm 1:2
“But his delight is in the law of the Lord.”
Is there something that you “DELIGHT" in? Something you love doing, something that makes you happy?
Here, the author of Psalm 1 tells us that the man and woman of God DELIGHT in the law of the Lord. Now, the word “law” here refers to ALL the Scripture, not just the 600+ Jewish laws of the Old Testament. And as we saw yesterday in 2 Timothy 3:16, ALL Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial to us!
Spurgeon said: “Man must have some delight, some supreme pleasure. His heart was never meant to be a vacuum. If not filled with the best things, it will be filled with the unworthy and disappointing.” Thus, the Psalmist is urging us to delight in God’s Word.
Psalm 1:2 ends with, “and in His law he meditates day and night.” The idea here is not that we do NOTHING else in life besides read the Bible and think about it… rather the focus is on our coming to ENJOY the Word of God, partially because of the benefit that happens to us when we read and study it and because it draws us closer to the LORD.
The idea of meditating is also a good one. Excuse the analogy, but the picture here is of a cow chewing its cud. Cows are made to eat grass, and then later, they regurgitate it up to chew some more and extract even more nutrition. They do that several times.
If we DELIGHT in God’s Word, we will do similarly. An example might be that we read something in the morning (maybe like one of these “Power of 10” verses) and then keep it in our mind throughout the day, “chewing” and “pondering” over and over. And then, ask the LORD what He wants you to get out of the verse and how He wants you to apply it.
Prayer: Lord, help me develop a delight for Your Word, and help me learn something from You every time I read or hear it. Amen.
