HARMONY

Philippians 2:2-4
“Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.  Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.  Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.”
(NLT)

In music when you lead a group, whether vocal or instrumental, you desire each musician to play together harmoniously.  The orchestra has a conductor, the choir a director, and both want to help connect and lead ALL the voices (or instruments) in order to make marvelous music together… which requires them to be in-sync with one another.  “Beautiful music” takes time to develop.  It takes many rehearsals and the commitment of each musician to follow the director and thus be truly connected to the group.  If someone refuses to follow, they are usually dismissed from the group.  Following and being harmonious are essential for music to be beautiful.

In his letter here to the church at Philippi, Paul was saying similarly. “Make me truly HAPPY by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another and working together with one mind and purpose.”

As in a quality orchestra or choir, Paul was not interested in “selfish” people who were looking out for their “own interests” but encouraged them to take an interest in others. To not do so would be the like a choir member who, instead of singing a soft portion softly, sings out loudly so everyone could hear him as he tries to “impress others” with his “wonderful voice.”  It could ruin a particular portion of the music.  Paul didn’t want that to happen in this church.

How are you at working harmoniously and taking an interest in others?

Prayer: Lord, I DO desire to fit into my church in a harmonious way.  I do want to make “beautiful music” while serving you side by side with other brothers and sisters in Christ. Help me to practice loving one-another by taking an interest in others too.  Amen.
