1 Samuel 30:6
“David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.”
Do you take your car to the gas station? Why?
Sounds like a simple question… and it is. We take our cars to the gas station to fill up. And why is that? Because, in the process of getting us from point A to points B and C, we use up the fuel that is in the tank and thus periodically, it needs to be refilled.
Life takes its toll, doesn’t it? Even if everything is going great, life is still fatiguing. And when things are not going great… it’s even worse.
Thus the point: We need to refill our spiritual and emotional “tanks" sometimes too.
But how to do that?
Most people – even most Christians – don’t look to the LORD to refill their “tanks” when they’re tired and weary. Many look to vacations or friends or watching a movie or, in some cases, extended sleep. And though all of these might be just “what the doctor ordered” (so to speak), our REAL source for all rest and recharging and strengthening needs to be the same as David used. “David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.”
So, HOW do we do that?
Isaiah 40:31 gives us the answer: “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount of with wings like eagles, they shall run and not grow weary, they shall walk and not faint.”
And again the question: “Ok, how do I do THAT?”
Psalm 46:10 – “Be still, and know that I am God.”
I think this is the biggest need of our times for Followers of Jesus. We are all – and I include myself – so busy with “stuff” that we simply don’t spend enough time with the Lord… listening, talking, and just being together.
So let me suggest that you carve out a few minutes… maybe only 5 if you’ve never done this before. Turn off all the electronics (or leave them in another room). No phones, tablets, TV… nothing electronic. Grab your Bible and go sit somewhere where you can be quiet and alone.
Then talk to the Lord.
You might start with this prayer.
Prayer: Lord, here I am. I want to know you better. I want to feel your touch. I want to hear your voice. Speak to me through your Word or your Spirit. Help me to recharge my batteries and help me to repeat this daily. Amen.
