CONNECTING with GOD
Day 18 | MEETING WITH GOD
MEETING WITH GOD
Exodus 34:29-30
“When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.”
Perhaps you remember the story from the book of Exodus… the one where Moses went up to Mount Sinai to meet with God. God talked with Moses and delivered the Ten Commandments to him for all the Israelites to follow.
Some who don’t know the Lord, are critical of God imposing His laws on His people, but it really makes sense on so many levels. First and foremost, the Israelites had just been freed from 400 years of captivity as slaves of Egypt. For all that time and through all those generations, they had been told what to do, when to eat, what to eat, how to live and on and on. The Egyptians were in charge.
Then upon being released from captivity, they had no idea of how to rule themselves. Thus, out of love, God gave them – through the tablets – the basic laws they would need to live life successfully.
We have no record of what happened during those 40 days and 40 nights that Moses met with God, other than his receiving the commandments and the fact that he asked to “see God.” Since that was impossible for Moses to do and live, God accommodated his request by shielding Moses in a rock and passing by, allowing Moses see the Shekinah glory of God’s essence. That, by itself, was enough to set Moses’ face aglow!
We become closer to people whom we see. When we meet for coffee or breakfast or at church or for a Bible study or whatever, we become closer to the ones we SEE and with whom we spend the most time.
Moses must have truly entreated God to let him see Him! Have you ever longed that much to see God? To know Him better?
What would you do if God offered YOU the opportunity to know Him better? To understand Him more? To learn deeper things about how He thinks and sees what’s going on? Would you say YES to that offer?
Well, God DOES offer each of us – in fact every person in the world – that very opportunity. God has given us His Word (aka the Bible) and His Spirit (God, the Holy Spirit). He wants to meet with each of us. And the good news is we don’t have to hike up a mountain!
We just need to “Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
Prayer: Lord, I do want to know you better. I do want to know what You think about things here on planet earth and in my life. Help me to believe that you want to meet with me too, as you did Moses. Help me to make time and space for those meetings and to make the most of them. Amen.
