CONNECTING with GOD
Day 07 | DO YOU?
DO YOU?
Ephesians 4:15-16
“But speaking the truth in love, let us grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.” (NASB)
This section of Scripture starts right off with an important admonition for we who are Jesus Followers: SPEAK THE TRUTH IN LOVE.
It gets tricky today, to get our eyes OFF of our political leaders, public figures, sports super stars, movie stars and others who are in the public spotlight… and on to what Jesus wants from us.
“Speaking the truth in love.” I only WISH I could hear the majority of those public figures I listed, who would (a) speak the TRUTH … but then also (b) speak it IN LOVE.
Today, there is so much hate, distrust, vitriolic exchanges … which are leading to violence, domestic terrorism and destruction. We are destroying our country, our society, our culture, our children’s future … and more.
But… God’s Word tells us HOW to act.
“Speaking the truth in LOVE.” That’s a biggie – and difficult at times to accomplish. None-the-less, it is God’s standard for His children, and we are to grow up in all ways to become like Christ.
We know from the Ten Commandments, that we are not to “bear false witness” (lie) and thus “speaking the truth” is a command from God that has been around since the beginning of time. In fact, the serpent showed his motivation when he told half-truths to Eve to get her to sin.
So, we are to speak the truth. Period.
But HOW we speak that truth, is as important.
1 Corinthians 13 – the “love chapter” – tells us that without love, we and our words and our actions are worthless. That means, that even if I’m 100% RIGHT, if I don’t share that in a loving, sensitive manner, my words and my opinions are worthless.
Truth is important, but LOVE is more important. We need both… and for some people, who love telling others where they’re wrong, this will be tough.
But, with God’s help, “All things are possible!”
Prayer: Lord, help me to find a way to DO both of these things. Tell the truth AND tell it in LOVE. Somehow you did that when you walked the earth and I want to be more like You. Amen.
