40 Days of WISDOM
Day 26 | WISDOM AND HONEY
WISDOM AND HONEY
Proverbs 24:13-14
“Eat honey, my son, for it is good; honey from the comb is sweet to your taste. Know also that wisdom is like honey for you: If you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.”
Most people like sweet things to some degree. Here, Solomon is telling his son – and us – that honey is “good” and “sweet” to the taste, which I doubt anyone would find an earth-shaking insight.
But then, Soloman says that "WISDOM is like HONEY.” Implying it is sweet also, and then adding that if his son finds wisdom (and follows it), “there is HOPE and a FUTURE” for him, and he’ll "not be cut off."
Unfortunately for Solomon’s Kingdom, Solomon ignored God’s direction about not marrying foreign women, which began the downfall. Then his son (Rehoboam), who was untrained, inherited the throne. A decision needed to be made, and the new king chose NOT to listen to his father’s wise elders and instead listened to his younger friends. Following that untested, unwise advice led to the Kingdom dividing in two, the northern Kingdom of Israel and the southern Kingdom of Judah.
Consider the book of Proverbs was written primarily for the benefit of Solomon’s son, Rehoboam… so why did he ignore his father’s wisdom?
Probably the same reason why so many today – including some Christians – don’t read much of the Word of God. PRIDE is the problem. There is something in each of us that genuinely wants to do things “our way,” whether there’s any logic behind it.
(A reading of 1 Kings 11-12 tells the fateful events that split the Kingdom.)
Proverbs 24:14 (msg) says, “Likewise knowledge, and wisdom for your soul—
Get that, and your future’s secured, your hope is on solid rock.”
We ALL should seek knowledge and wisdom for our minds and souls; then, our futures will be secure as though our lives were built on a solid rock.
Prayer: LORD God, You have supplied us with so much Godly wisdom. Help me to read and absorb some of it every day. Amen.
