Day  22 | TAKING GOOD ADVICE
TAKING GOOD ADVICE

Proverbs 19:20-21
“Take good counsel and accept correction — that’s the way to live wisely and well.  We humans keep brainstorming options and plans, but God’s purpose prevails.”

I guess we’ve all done it; we refused to listen to someone giving us good advice.

It starts when we’re young and tell our mom or dad, “I want to do it myself!”  Then, later, after we’ve learned how to tie our shoes, we start ignoring our folks on more serious things.

Why we do this, of course, is PRIDE. We all have periods where we feel we DO know it all. Unfortunately, some folks never outgrow the feeling that they know everything and everyone else is idiots. (People like that are usually miserable to be around and thus have few friends.)

The problems with that attitude are several, but the biggest problem is that many people today who are full of themselves – won’t listen even to the wise counsel of Almighty God. People like that, confident that they know it all, don’t often see a need for Jesus or God or the eternal life He offers. Many probably feel that God will welcome them to heaven so they can solve all the problems there.

Solomon, the wisest man ever, encourages us to “take good counsel and accept correction.”  He acknowledges that none of us know it all, and there is always someone who can offer GOOD advice to help us in any number of ways.

But, a KEY is to make sure it’s GOOD advice. How do we do that?

Another Scripture from Proverbs teaches that “there is wisdom in a multitude of counselors.”  And that means that if you get good advice from a good friend, you might be wise to see if you get similar advice from another good friend or two.

But ultimately, keep this in mind… from another verse in Proverbs, “The mind of man plans his way, but the Lord directs His path.”  Plan, get good advice, pray, but then allow Almighty God to lead.

Prayer: Lead me, Lord, day by day, through little issues or big ones. Amen.
