Day 18 | PERFECT TEACHINGS
40 Days of WISDOM
Day 18 | PERFECT TEACHINGS
PERFECT TEACHINGS
Psalm 19:7-10
“The teachings of the Lord are perfect; they give new strength. The rules of the Lord can be trusted; they make plain people wise. The orders of the Lord are right; they make people happy. The commands of the Lord are pure; they light up the way. Respect for the Lord is good; it will last forever. The judgments of the Lord are true; they are completely right. They are worth more than gold, even the purest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even the finest honey.”
It's difficult to find much we can call "perfect." That is, after all, an extremely HIGH standard – perfection.
And yet David – the author of Psalm 19 – is stating that “the teachings of the LORD are perfect” even though he has been through incredible times: shepherd boy, Goliath, running from a king on the hunt to kill him, Bathsheba, losing a baby, and more.
David says the LORD's teachings will last forever, and here we are 3000 years after they were written, reading the eternal wisdom God inspired. (Wow!)
So, what value are they to us today?
Well, David says they are PERFECT and PURE and TRUE and SWEETER than HONEY, worth more than GOLD, can be TRUSTED, and will make regular folks WISE and HAPPY.
Where else can you find an offer like that?
But here's the rub… each of us must accept God's Word – aka the “teachings of the LORD” – as just that, the Word of God. The final authority. True north. The last word on all things regarding our faith, our salvation through Jesus Christ, and our relationship to the Living God of the universe.
Many have done so through the centuries (including the Old Testament saints and now those under the New Covenant). But many in our world have not, and rebel against God and anything or anyone connected to Him.
Prayer: Thank You for the perfect teachings of Your Word. As one of your children, please help me to be wise and walk in them. Amen.
