WISDOM AND AGE
Job 12:1-13
“But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind. Does not the ear test words as the tongue tastes food? Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding? To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his.” (NIV)
It’s interesting how often today animals seem wiser than people. Some of the nonsensical things people are trying to do today are settled in the animal kingdom.
In these verses from the mouth of Job, he is explaining to his three friends his understanding of God’s ways. He is speaking truth to them and no one present would disagree.
Job is also musing that wisdom SHOULD be more common as we get older; whereas when we were children or youth, we were still learning how to be wise.
Verse 13 is interesting. It tells us (the readers) that GOD owns (or is THE source of) “wisdom, power, counsel, and understanding.” Those qualities “belong to” the LORD.
So, who can you think of right now – friends, acquaintances, or someone on the news – who appears to be living in a non-wise (from God’s point of view) manner? People who are not displaying Bible-based wisdom or power.
If they are very young, they may get a “pass.” But if they are adults, especially older adults, who show neither wisdom nor understanding, they are sad indeed and have not grown as the Lord had planned.
Prayer: LORD, help me to be wise and show understanding about the times in which we live and HOW to live in a way that pleases You. Amen.
