Day  5 | PROBLEMS AND HOPE
PROBLEMS AND HOPE

Romans 5:3-5
“We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.”

C.S. Lewis, a Christian professor and philosopher from the 20th century wrote a book entitled: The Problem of Pain.  Many others… apologists, pastors, Bible scholars, and just deep thinkers have discussed the universality of problems, trials, and pain and what place – if any – they have in a world created and run by an all-powerful and loving God.

We can’t summarize all that discussion in a 2-minute devotional. Still, these verses help us to see the value – however difficult it may be – of rejoicing during problems BECAUSE of the positive results that can come: endurance, strength of character, and confident HOPE of salvation.

HOPE looks to the future.  HOPE anticipates something good up ahead.  HOPE enables us to endure the pain today because of the promise of BETTER days ahead.

So, let me ask –especially if you’re going through some trials right now – what are you counting on happening in the future?  And, if you can’t see any way for a happier tomorrow here in this life, what do you SEE in the next?

Paul writes here, “And this hope will not lead to disappointment.”  Then He goes on to intimate that the Holy Spirit is involved with His children and will fill our hearts and minds with His love, and faith, and hope, and MORE.

Prayer: LORD, I need You to help me get through what I’m going through. Thank You for offering never to leave me or forsake me.  Help me to look expectantly to the future because YOU are there!  Amen.
