40 Days in the Old Testament
Day 34 | SEEK JUSTICE, LOVE MERCY, WALK HUMBLY
SEEK JUSTICE, LOVE MERCY, WALK HUMBLY
Micah 6:8
“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (NIV)
Micah was another minor prophet who prophesied against the leaders for their injustice, greed, and lack of humility. He also brought word about God's justice and how to live in a way God approves.
The name "Micah" means, "Who is like the LORD?"
Primarily, Micah prophesied about the coming judgment on God's people who were continually pursuing evil. He used lawsuit and courtroom terminology. His writing was in three oracles or cycles, moving from doom to hope.
One-third of his writing was about the people's sins, the next third book of the punishment of God to come, and the last third shared the promises of hope for the faithful after the judgment. His writing shows a theme of God's inevitable divine judgment for sin, but also God's enduring commitment to His covenant promises to His people.
The Book of Micah contains elements of the New Testament gospel ("good news"). These include God's sovereignty over the universe, the universality of human rebellion, God's commitment to punishing sin, His great mercy, compassion, and willingness to forgive. Plus, the future salvation and great blessing coming; the inclusion of all people who acknowledge the Lord and the exclusion of those who don't and a future King from the line of David in this future age.
Then, Micah lays out, in our KEY verse (6:8) for this book, how one may walk with the LORD. (Note: This is not a path to salvation, but rather how we Followers of Jesus should learn to live.)
God loves us and wants a relationship with us, His people.
Micah simplifies a lifestyle that we should pursue:
1. Act justly… doing what is fair and right to your neighbor.
2. Love mercy… being kind and compassionate to all.
3. Walk humbly… walk daily with the LORD and realize you're not that important.
Prayer: LORD, I love you and want to walk humbly with You day by day. Amen.
