Day 36 | DOING OUR PART
DOING OUR PART
John 14:1
“Let not your hearts be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me.”
Here, Jesus is talking to His followers. His close friends. The twelve who have been with Him throughout his ministry thus far. They are troubled, as he just told them that that one of them was a traitor.
But then he says, “Let not your heart be troubled.” Have you ever noticed how many times in the Bible, God tells us to DO something? This is not always “I’m going to do this for you,” but many times God expects US to participate in His grand plan and DO something.
Here He is expecting those disciples (and we too) to NOT let their hearts be troubled.
Jesus never wanted us to have life without trouble, but He promised that we could have an untroubled heart even in a troubled life.
Jesus was almost giving a command to these guys, “STOP being troubled.” One Bible scholar suggested that, “Set your heart at ease,” would be a reasonable translation of that section.
Spurgeon said: “Jesus takes no delight in the doubt and disquietude of his people. When he saw that, because of what he had said to them, sorrow had filled the hearts of his apostles, he pleaded with them in great love, and besought them to be comforted.”
He said, “You believe in God, believe also in me.”
Jesus is teaching that His solution to being troubled is not a recipe, but a real RELATIONSHIP with Him.
We are not told to just sit back and wait for God to do something. Here, He’s giving US something WE have to do.
Prayer: LORD, there are many things happening today in my life and my world that are upsetting and troubling. HELP me to focus on YOU, and not give in to fear, doubt or worry. Help me my faith. Amen.
