PASSING THE FAITH ALONG
Psalm 78:5-8
“For He established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in israel, which He commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children; that the generation to come might know them, the children who would be born, that they may arise and declare them to their children, that they may set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; and may not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not set its heart aright, and whose spirit was not faithful to God.”
Yesterday I mentioned that “God has no grandchildren.”
Well, here, the Psalmist is pointing out that the Israelites were instructed about the need to TEACH their children about ALL that God had done for them in times past.
Unlike a human bloodline that can continue for generations without any effort, the Psalmist teaches here that THEY had a responsibility to keep “passing the faith along” – as the Gaither song says.
“That they should make them known to their children.” Then and now, God gives His Word for sharing to future generations. FIVE generations appear to be mentioned here: 1. Fathers; 2. Their children; 3. The generation to come; 4. And their children; 5. And THEIR children. They were never to lose sight of their history throughout all those generations.
I am blessed as I am also part of a five-generation “passing of the faith.” My grandparents, my parents, Debbie and me, our children, and their children. BUT, we can never take it for granted that any future great-grands would come to TRUST in the LORD. And that’s what Paul is trying to say here.
Prayer: LORD, help us all to take OUR responsibility seriously to pass the faith along to our family members. Then LORD, allow us to share our faith – in a conversational style – with our friends and neighbors as YOU lead. Amen.
