Day 23 | SLOW TO ANGER
SLOW TO ANGER
Proverbs 19:11
“Good sense and discretion make a man slow to anger, and it is his honor and glory to overlook a transgression or an offense [without seeking revenge and harboring resentment].” (AMP)
Solomon, the author of Proverbs and arguably the wisest man ever, tells us in this verse that being “slow to anger” is “good sense.”
Everyone reading (or listening) has been insulted by someone at some time over something.
The "natural" thing to do is to get angry and argue back. And although giving the other person the facts may be appropriate, letting it sink into a full-blown argument that causes separation and division is NOT what Solomon was teaching.
The KEY to me in this verse is "slow to anger." When I see someone who is "quick to anger," I see an immature Believer, or perhaps NOT a Jesus-follower at all. If he is a Believer, maybe then some teaching or discipleship is in order.
But our individual responsibility is to apply this verse appropriately: "A wise person demonstrates patience, for mercy means holding your tongue. When you are insulted, be quick to forgive and forget it, for you are virtuous when you overlook an offense.” (Prov 19:11, TPT)
Prayer: Lord, help me see how to apply this verse, especially in our church family. Life is complicated, but You want to make it easier, and this verse gives me wisdom. Amen.
