ABUNDANT LIFE
John 10:10
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they would have life, and have it abundantly.” (NASB)
Before Genesis 1:1, when God made all the heavens and the earth, there was in heaven, God; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. All three existed in perfect harmony and were involved in creating the universe, the earth, and everything on it.
Unfortunately, the fallen angels (Satan and his demons) also came to earth and tempted and tricked Adam and Eve into violating that perfect Garden God made just for them. Now, we don’t know how long they lived in the Garden until they sinned, but ever since, there has been this ongoing spiritual battle where Satan and his minions are trying to persuade mankind to turn away from God and worship him.
In today’s verse, Jesus compares the Pharisees’ “shepherding and care” for their people to His own. They – motivated by Satan – would not care if they stole, killed, or destroyed the sheep. Jesus, however, came to give them LIFE and abundant life. And in the next verse, Jesus states, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11). The Pharisees would NEVER have done that.
Shepherds lead their flocks. Shepherds feed their flocks. Shepherds are supposed to protect, care for, and even sacrifice for their flocks. That’s what Jesus did for us!
But also notice the word “abundantly.” It implies MORE than enough! The Amplified Bible says: “…I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows].”
Remember this: there is a spiritual battle going on. On one side, the Enemy of our Faith is lying to us and trying to pull us away from God. On the other hand, our Good Shepherd wants us to have LIFE and have it abundantly!
Prayer: LORD God, thank You for your goodness. Thank You for ALL you have done for me and are doing. I worship You, Almighty God, there is none like You. Amen.
