THANKSGIVING
Psalm 100
“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.” (KJV)
Today is Thanksgiving Day here in America, and this psalm – one of my three favorites (along with Psalm 1 and 23) – seems particularly appropriate for us.
Only five verses, but this psalm is all about the LORD, JOY, GLADNESS, SINGING, TRUTH, GOODNESS, and THANKSGIVING.
What words come to your mind when you think about the Lord God?
The Psalmist here uses words about God that are resplendent in the glory they paint!
This psalm – originally sung to music – leads us into singing joyfully! (As a former worship pastor, I like reminding people whether they can sing isn’t the issue… making a JOYFUL noise is!) Further, we are to SERVE the Lord with gladness!
And WHY should we do that?
Because of verse 3 – we know that the LORD, He is GOD, HE made us – we didn’t make ourselves. We are His people and His sheep and are dependent upon Him. Further, the LORD is good!
It has become popular to say, “God is good!” … to which the typical response is, “All the time!” And it is true!
God’s mercy is unending, everlasting, and amazing. And God’s TRUTH exists forever. Whether others agree or not, God’s Word is TRUTH and this TRUTH will outlast ALL the governments and nay-sayers.
As believers in God and followers of Jesus Christ (God in the flesh), we are above all others in a place of KNOWING the truth, which can set us free to WORSHIP and PRAISE and be THANKFUL to our Lord God all year round.
Prayer: Father God, I praise You, I worship You, I sing about your truth and goodness … and I am incredibly thankful to be one of Your children. Amen.
