ABOUT FAITH
Hebrews 11:1
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
The word "faith" is used throughout the Scriptures. We read verses like "The just shall live by faith" (Habakkuk 2:4) and "Faith without works is dead" (James 2:26).
Have you ever wondered: "So what IS faith and if it's that important, how can get more? And why did Jesus criticize his disciples and say, "O ye of little faith?" Is faith something that I already have? Does it grow? Can it shrink?"
Ephesians 2:8-9 say: "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."
So, God gives us the gift of faith.
Our faith in God is based on our understanding of who God is, as revealed in the Word of God and by the Spirit of God.
As we read the New Testament, we see that one thing Jesus criticized His disciples for was their "littleness of faith." Jesus knew they had it, and He expected them to grow and use it.
Have you ever felt that your faith was weak? Have you ever wished you had MORE faith? I suspect we all have from time to time. And the Word of God has the answer for that too:
"Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God." (Romans 10:17).
Faith – pistis in Greek – means "belief, trust or confidence in someone or something."
Thus, the simple answer is that the more time we spend in God's Word ("hearing"), the more our faith will grow. Much like watering and fertilizing your plants help them to grow strong, spending time in God's Word will help your faith grow strong too.
Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for the gift of FAITH and the way you have provided to help it grow. Amen
