WHAT GOD HAS NOT GIVEN
2 Timothy 1:7
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (NKJV)
Fear. One of the many emotions we can experience, though probably the one we wish least to feel.
Yet, since God built that into our makeup, what are the positive uses?
Well, how about when walking on the street, you see a car coming your way, speeding, and driving erratically? FEAR will make you dodge out of the way. FEAR can keep you from a pack of coyotes, not stick your hand on a hot pot on the stove, and so on.
But a “spirit of fear” is something else. You see, God gave us FEAR to, in some cases, keep us safe. But Satan wants us to be swallowed up in fear and to experience it in “overdrive,” if you will. Satan wants us to be so consumed by fear that we can’t function or do the good works God has planned for us to do.
So, Paul is telling young preacher-trainee Timothy here that GOD, Almighty Yahweh, has NOT given us the “spirit of fear” to fill and control us. Instead, we should allow ourselves to be filled with power (from God), love (God’s love), and a sound mind (also from God). We should ask the LORD to fill us with what He wants us to be filled with, and to empty us and protect us from what He doesn’t want us to be filled with, in this case, the SPIRIT of fear.
The “spirit of fear” is from the “rulers of darkness.” Paul writes: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Eph 6:12)
Be sensitive to the fear in your life, ask the Lord for wisdom and discernment, and then cast down and pray out any “spirit of fear” that comes knocking at your door. Just refuse delivery from the enemy.
Prayer: LORD, thank You for the power, love, and sound mind You offer me. Those things ARE from You. Amen.
