GOD’S REAL NAME
Exodus 3:13-15
“And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, what is his name? What shall I say unto them?
“And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.
“And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, the Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.” (KJV)
Have you ever been asked your name by a new acquaintance? Do you share your real name or perhaps a nickname? What do you think about YOUR name? Does your name have a meaning? Are you proud of it, or perhaps a little sheepish?
This conversation between Moses and God took place as God was giving Moses his assignment that would ultimately result in God’s children being set free from Egypt and the Pharaoh. Moses is humble enough to tell God he’s not the right guy, but God reassures him, “…I will be with thee…” (vs. 11). Then Moses wonders if his people would accept his message and thus asks, “…who shall I tell them has sent me?”
God then makes a remarkable statement; “I Am that I Am.” Initially, this may seem redundant, but God is saying something critical to know, God has no equal. “Tell them I AM has sent me to you.”
“I Am” simply means “is.” GOD IS. There has never been a time when God did not exist. “I Am” conveys the idea that God is entirely independent. He relies on nothing for life or existence. God needs no one and no thing; life is in Himself.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, God of the universe, the Great I AM; thank You for caring about me. I am nothing without You, an insignificant dot in the universe. And yet, You created me, know me, and love me. Thank You! Amen.
