LOVE IS…
1 Corinthians 13:4-8
“Love is patient, love is kind, it is not jealous; love does not brag, it is not arrogant. It does not act disgracefully, it does not seek its own benefit; it is not provoked, does not keep an account of a wrong suffered, it does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; it keeps every confidence, it believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.” (NASB)
Hi, and welcome to my new “40-Days” series – this time – 40 Favorite Scripture verses!
If you were to survey ALL the emotions you, your family, and your friends' experience, and which one was valued the most… LOVE would most likely win.
Love.
Through the years, people have shown their differing attitudes and usages of the word "love." From that funny "red-neck" usage: "I love the flag, I love my truck, I love my dog, and I love my woman – in that order," to the musical usage: "Love is a Many Splendored Thing," to what the Bible teaches, as described here in 1 Corinthians.
So what IS love … and WHAT should we look to as the BEST AUTHORITY about love? The latest tabloid cover personality? The red-neck quoted above? The latest TV show? Where?
Without hesitation, I suggest we look to God's Word for – after all – God IS Love.
Paul penned these words (via inspiration from the Holy Spirit) in 1 Corinthians 13 when he explained to that church what REAL love was.
He talks about what love IS (patient, kind, rejoicing in the truth, keeping confidences, believing, enduring, NOT failing) … and about what it is NOT (jealous, braggadocios, arrogant, acting disgracefully, self-centered, easily angered, remembering EVERY wrong others have done, and being happy with unrighteousness).
In our world today, we Believers NEED to practice real love. Jesus said: "A new command I give you, that you love ONE-ANOTHER as I have loved you." (John 13:34). So, let’s start in our churches today so that people who visit will be amazed and think, "Wow, they really love one another. I'd like some of that."
Prayer: LORD, help me to love as these verses teach us. Help others to see me as a Follower of Yours. Amen.
