YOUR STRONGHOLD
Psalm 27:1
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (KJV)
I’ve had the privilege and joy of directing three church choirs during my ministry years – before pastoring my current church – and each was much fun! One of our favorite numbers with each choir was “The Lord is My Light,” based on Psalm 27. Even as I write these words, my mind is humming the tune to this classic number.
But besides the music, let’s look more at the message.
One thing that people instinctively dislike is darkness. We want to be able to SEE our surroundings and any danger that may be in front of us. We want to SEE the colors of the trees… the sky… the flowers. We value our eyesight above all the other five senses and darkness essentially negates that sense.
David – the psalmist here – is painting a verbal picture, in song, of the LORD being his Light. And because he has a Light, he can see and doesn’t need to be afraid.
David goes on to say the Lord is also his STRENGTH.
David must have been a skilled and experienced warrior; nevertheless, he wisely looked to the LORD for his strength and learned early on not to depend on himself for everything. (Maybe that is just one more reason why God called him a “man after my own heart.”)
Because God provided him with light, salvation, and strength, there was no reason for him to fear.
What are you facing? Do you feel like you’re in a dark tunnel? Does there seem to be no end in sight? Then, do as David did and look to God to be your light, salvation, and strength.
Prayer: LORD, thank you for encouraging me with this verse from David. Amen.
