40 Days Praying the PSALMS
Day 29 | CREATE IN ME A CLEAN HEART, O GOD
40 Days Praying the PSALMS
Day 29 | CREATE IN ME A CLEAN HEART, O GOD
CREATE IN ME A CLEAN HEART, O GOD
from Psalm 51
“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me."
"Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.” (KJV)
As a reader (or listener) of this devotional, you know the truth of Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Imagine you are the prophet Nathan being told by God to confront King David about his gross sin with Bathsheba. How would you feel about THAT assignment?
David had messed up royally and was both an adulterer and a murderer.
To David’s credit, though, he realized his sin, confessed, and then wrote this psalm.
G. Campbell Morgan, a great preacher from the past, said, “This great song, pulsating with the agony of a sin-stricken soul, helps us to understand the stupendous wonder of the everlasting mercy of our God.”
I remember directing more than one church choir in singing, “Create in Me a Clean Heart,” based on verses 10-13 of this Psalm. It’s a touching song you may have heard in church. You feel the agony in David’s writing as he pleads with God for a clean heart and restoration of the JOY of his salvation. David had a REAL relationship with God, and God provided the forgiveness, cleansing, and restoration as only God can do.
How’s your relationship with God?
Prayer: LORD, I know I haven’t lived a perfect life. Show me any unconfessed sin in my life so that I may enjoy a clean heart and a right spirit within me. Amen.
