Day 17| SONGS OF THANKSGIVING
SONG OF THANKSGIVING
Psalm 28:2, 6-8
“Hear the voice of my supplications, When I cry to You,
When I lift up my hands toward Your holy sanctuary. Praise the Lord! For he has heard my cry for mercy. The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving. The Lord gives his people strength.” (NKJV)
It’s interesting that even in the church, there aren’t more songs of thanksgiving. We have a ton of church songs on Christmas, many about Easter, but few on Thanksgiving. And not the American holiday, but the attitude that we Believers should have.
David was an interesting guy. We know most about David’s life, the good times and the bad, through his record in 1 Samuel. But we know most about David’s heart, his relationship with God, and how he responded from the Psalms.
David is crying out again to the Lord for help in this psalm. He is lifting up his hands, a traditional prayer posture in his day (and ok today too).
But then, David switches to THANKSGIVING. Apparently, he is recalling how the Lord helped him, and instead of just moving on with life – as though God’s help was common (which it is) – he WISELY gives God the glory and the THANKS that He deserves.
Generally speaking, WE are a very unthankful group. We fall far short in thanking the LORD for ALL He does for us. We teach our children – when they are young – to say “Thank You” in hopes that it will become a part of their lives. And yet, we forget what God did for us yesterday or last year and whine because of our pain today. Yes, we should cry out to the Lord when in need, but we MUST REMEMBER to pour out our THANKS to HIM instead of being ungrateful children.
Prayer: LORD, forgive me for not remembering ALL You have done for me and for not giving you the praise and thanks you deserve. I’ll try to do better because YOU are so wonderful to me. Amen.
