40 Days Praying the PSALMS
Day 14| THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD
THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD

Psalm 23:1
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
(NKJV)

Arguably the most popular and well-known Psalm in the Bible was written by King David as he reflected on his youthful shepherding days with no shame of that prior occupation.

The six short verses of the 23rd Psalm have calmed more people than anything else I have personally experienced. I’ve quoted this Psalm beside many a death bed, in many hospital rooms, one-on-one before or after church, at a memorial service, over the phone, and in many other situations. I’ve seen scores of people comforted by these powerful yet simple words.

David’s picture of a shepherd caring for his flock is simple enough to understand. And then, when we think of OUR Great Shepherd – our Lord Jesus Christ – caring for us, it brings it home to now.

With a good shepherd, a sheep would never have to wonder about water, his next meal, or getting stuck in a hole. Even if the sheep wandered, the shepherd would notice, find him, and bring him back to the flock.

We have all gotten like that. We’ve all wandered and gotten stuck in life. We’ve all needed something. We’ve all needed the Lord to rescue us.

Isaiah wrote, “All of us, like sheep, have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the wrongdoing of us all To fall on Him.” (Isaiah 53:6, NASB)

We should be grateful that our loving God has given us a Shepherd who – like David during his shepherding days – cares enough to take care of us, find us food and cool still water, and when we mess up, takes action, forgives us and helps us to come back and to move forward.
What a fantastic psalm! What an amazing Great Shepherd we have!

Prayer: LORD, thank You for being my Great Shepherd. With You, I genuinely have no wants. Amen.
