Day 13| DAVID AND JESUS
DAVID AND JESUS

From Psalm 22
“My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my help are the words of my groaning. My God, I cry out by day, but You do not answer; And by night, but I have no rest. Yet You are holy, You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel... I am poured out like water,
And all my bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It is melted within me. My strength is dried up like a piece of pottery, and my tongue clings to my jaws; and You lay me in the dust of death. For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. I can count all my bones.
They look, they stare at me; They divide my garments among them,
And they cast lots for my clothing.”
(NASB)

This psalm of David is most interesting and even prophetic. David laments in the first 21 verses and then moves to praise in the final 10. It tells the story of him being first forgotten by God and then found and rescued. And although this psalm applies to David directly, it is also prophetic in that it applies to the One in David’s lineage, who is the Messiah… Jesus Christ.

Jesus from the Cross said many of these phrases and experienced many of the same things.

So, one question is: HOW did that happen since David lived over 1000 years before Christ was born? The answer: The Holy Spirit carried David along, giving him the insight and the experience which would be repeated a millennium later by God’s Son when on the Cross.

It’s comforting to know – in this Psalm – that David’s lament ends on a positive note, just as the story of Jesus finishes with the resurrection! God knew what was coming – even if David didn’t. He also knows what’s coming for you and asks that you stay faithful to Him.

Prayer: Lord, I’m not nearly as bad off as David – or our Lord – was, but thank You for always being near and helping me get through all that I’m going through. Amen.
