40 Days Praying the PSALMS
Day 9 | ENLIGHTEN MY EYES
40 Days Praying the PSALMS
Day 9 | ENLIGHTEN MY EYES
ENLIGHTEN MY EYES
Psalm 13
“How long, Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? How long am I to feel anxious in my soul, with grief in my heart all the day? How long will my enemy be exalted over me? Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; Enlighten my eyes, or I will sleep the sleep of death, And my enemy will say, ‘I have overcome him,’ And my adversaries will rejoice when I am shaken. But I have trusted in Your faithfulness; My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, Because He has looked after me.”
God sometimes waits until our prayers are desperate before answering. And that’s a problem with many prayers because – if we’re analytical – we aren’t usually desperate when praying.
Here David says: “enlighten my eyes or I will sleep the sleep of death.” An odd thing to say, but David realizes that he may not be seeing things the way they really are and he needs God’s help for that. Further, if not “enlightened” he may become spiritually dull (and even dead) towards the things of God.
A similar concept is found in Ephesians 5:14 which says: “Awake you who sleep, arise from the dead and Christ will give you light.”
Question… would you consider your relationship with God – right now – one that is alive and active, or one that is more nonchalant and a bit sleepy?
David shook himself up and reminded himself he trusted in God’s faithfulness, rejoiced in God’s salvation, and sang to the Lord because God cares and looked after him.
Perhaps you might consider doing the same today.
Prayer: LORD, I admit that at times my relationship with you becomes a little routine, pat, and without a lot of freshness. Lord, I don’t want to ever forget WHO you are and ALL that You have done for me. I am thankful! Amen.
