40 Reasons God DELIGHTS in YOU
Day 23 | GOD’S LAWS ARE WRITTEN ON OUR HEARTS
GOD’S LAWS ARE WRITTEN ON OUR HEARTS
Romans 2:14-15
“Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right.” (NLT)
Research shows that nearly 41 million speeding tickets are issued annually, about 1 per second. I imagine that at least a percentage of these folks try to excuse their action by claiming they had no idea what the speed limit was.
Societally, we have a lot of bad behavior going on today. People are lying left and right, accusing falsely, denigrating someone they disagree with, using loud and threatening voices to “win” a debate, and even worse.
But Paul tells us that people have God’s laws instinctively written on their hearts. It’s one of the things that sets us apart from animals – we have morals. There are things that we ALL know are right and others we know to be wrong.
So, where do these general rules come from? They come from God – our Creator – who has built them into our DNA.
Does that mean that everyone listens to God? Sadly, no. But does everyone have access to His essential, fundamental “right-wrong” list? Yes. Everyone knows – instinctively – that murder is wrong; that rape is wrong; that child abduction is wrong… and so on. The fact that we DO have a moral compass is one of the proofs of the existence of God. For without that absolute moral compass, no laws make sense. Whether speeding or murder or stealing or burning someone’s house down because they didn’t smile at you last week when you were driving by.
We all have God’s laws – His basic morality – inside us. It’s part of what makes us human, created in the image of God.
Prayer: Lord, help me listen to Your Spirit when He guides me to do this or that or avoid this or that. I want to live pleasing in Your sight. Amen.
