FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD

John 3:14-16
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
 (NKJV)

Continuing from yesterday’s discussion between Nicodemus and Jesus… Jesus takes Nick back to the Old Testament and Moses in the wilderness and saves the people from deadly snake bites (by doing what God told him). Then, Jesus makes the parallel as to why HE came to earth.
The explicit promise here in verse 15 is: “whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”  Then to make sure we all understand, it is repeated in the familiar John 3:16 verse: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Books have been written on just this one verse. Father God loved us – the world He made – SO MUCH that he could not bear to see us unforgiven, without hope, and perishing. So, He sends His one and only Son – Jesus – to earth on a mission to provide what we need to receive everlasting life.

Verse 14 again… “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up.” Jesus is talking here about when Moses lifted up a symbol of the serpent upon a pole and when those Israelites who the deadly snakes had bitten looked upon it, they would be healed. Jesus, too, is eventually lifted up on a pole (crucified), and “whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Prayer: LORD, thank You again for sending your one and only Son to earth for our benefit. We don’t deserve it, but I am grateful that I can have everlasting life through believing in Him.  Amen.
