40 Days of NEW with GOD
Day 34 | THE NEW COVENANT
THE NEW COVENANT

Jeremiah 31:31-34
“‘The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,’ declares the Lord. ‘This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,’ declares the Lord. ‘I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, “Know the Lord,” because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,’ declares the Lord. ‘For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.’”
 (NIV)

One of the most essential theological truths for a Christian should be the NEW Covenant. I know this sounds deep, but it’s not that difficult. Here it is in a nutshell: The Old Testament is often called the “Old Covenant.”  It was the way God dealt with His people back then. He promised a future NEW covenant – under Jesus – but they lived under the OLD, with 613 laws that must be kept, including regular sacrifices for the forgiveness of sin.

The NEW Testament – which we’re under – is the NEW Covenant, after the coming of Jesus, the Son of God, and after his life, death, burial, and resurrection.

As today’s prophecy from Jeremiah portends, Jesus the Messiah was coming! We take it for granted as it is ALL we have known spiritually, whereas the LAW and the PROPHETS were all our Old Testament relatives knew back then.

As we’ll find over the next few days, life with God is SO much better (I think) under the New Covenant!

Prayer: LORD, thank You for the time You knew I would be born, raised, and serve You under the New Covenant. Amen.
