Day 31 | SOMETHING NEW: REST

SOMETHING NEW: REST
Genesis 2:1-3
“Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.”
How’d you sleep last night? Get a good rest, or maybe not so much?
It turns out that REST is essential for people… and animals, too. We need roughly 8 hours of sleep daily to recharge and prepare for another day. God built that into our systems, so people of all ages need sleep to function well.
But here in Genesis 2, we learn that not only did God do all the creation in six days, but He – Almighty God – RESTED on the 7th day. Consider that. Almighty, all-powerful, all-knowing, everywhere present God of the universe, the Creator God who made it all RESTED on the 7th day.
Why? As a model for us, the pinnacle of His creation. We need to rest too, and more than just at night.
As our world has gotten faster and faster, with instant communications, faster cars, faster jets, and more, we have – as a culture – nearly forgotten the model that God gave us to REST on the 7th day. But here it is.
You might ask, is that relevant or important today?
The answer is YES!
Why?
Because God knows us, His creation, better than we know ourselves, and He knows that we function BEST if we follow His plan and REST appropriately.
You may recall the fourth of the 10 Commandments which says, “Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.” So REST. Spend extra time with Him in prayer, Bible reading, and meditation.
Remember this adage: Everything in the Bible that God tells us to do or not do is ultimately for OUR benefit and for His glory.
Prayer: LORD, help me organize my time so I can rest one day each week. Amen.
