Day 30 | A NEW COMMANDMENT
A NEW COMMANDMENT

John 13:34-35
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.  By this all will know that you are My disciples if you have love for one another.”
(NKJV)

It’s easy to read this familiar passage of Scripture and see Jesus was talking to His people and telling them they were to love one another. Simple enough.

But I see something else that I find amazing in these verses.

Most people have heard of and read the 10 commandments. Unfortunately, according to recent surveys, most Americans can’t name more than four, but they know there are ten.

(You might want to stop reading – or stop the audio – and quiz yourself. How many can YOU name?)

Now, back to these verses, WHO is Jesus addressing? His disciples, the guys sharing the “last supper” together here in John 13, just before Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested.

Now, the original 10 commandments came from God, right? Because only HE has the authority to decree “commandments” for people to follow, right? His original TEN, received by Moses, were implemented as “law” back in the day. (Even today, hundreds of millions of Christians and Jews know and believe in the 10 commandments, which are still the best moral law ever.)

But consider this: Here we find Jesus giving a NEW COMMANDMENT to His followers just like His Father did when He gave Moses the 10 commandments on the mountain.

How could Jesus do that?   Is He God?   YES!

And that’s the most often overlooked point of this verse. Jesus was again making Himself equal to God because He IS God, part of the Trinity, and He could give a “commandment” just as the Father did. Ponder that!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I agree with Thomas, the first to say to You, “My Lord and My God.”  Thank You for this fantastic commandment. You are my Lord and my God, too, amen.
